Q1: Please let me know you impression of Senator Ted Cruz’s bill calling for the blacklisting of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated organizations in the United States because they should be designated as terrorist groups.
Dr. wlaid: This bill is unjust and not based on true facts. Actually, it contradicts with the American values based on freedom and justice. Also, it will enhance extremism throughout the Islamic world.
Q2: How do you view Arab countries such as Egypt, UAE and Saudi Arabia that are cracking down on the Muslim Brotherhood and efforts these governments to get the US to join them in their action?
Dr. wlaid: We think that the decision taken by those countries was hasty and unwise and we call upon them to reevaluate their decision. Every now and again, we hear unofficial leaks indicating that those countries are reconsidering this matter.
Q3: What does the Muslim Brotherhood stand for?
Dr. wlaid: The Muslim brotherhood is an organization that preaches moderate Islam in peaceful means. We stand firmly against extremism and terrorism and we share common values such as Democracy, freedom and pluralism with the rest of the free world.
Q4: If US Senator Ted Cruz’s bill passes, what will the Muslim Brotherhood do about it?
Dr. wlaid: We will choose lawful ways to resist this bill and we believe the American constitution and system will defeat this unfair bill.
Q5: What are you and your supporters doing in terms of lobbying against this bill going forward? Is your affiliate in the US CAIR helping in this effort?
Dr. wlaid: We will do our best to stop this bill by getting legal consultations and through making dialogues with think tanks and American decisions makers.
Q6: When discussion touches on the Muslim Brotherhood, the name Sayyid Qutb often comes up. Qutb, as you know, studied in the United States where he became disgusted with the society and what he perceived as loose morals. In his heart he believed in jihad to ensure Islam gains the dominant place in the world. To this end he espoused spreading Sharia Law to guide societies worldwide, including the US to wipe out social ills and turn toward Islam.
Dr. wlaid: The Muslim brotherhood embraces the thoughts of its founder Hasan Al Banna. Sayyid Qutb is not the official thinker of the movement.
We highly regard the human values of the American Society although we don’t agree on some of its moral practices.
Our point of view regarding spreading Islam, It is only through peaceful means, cooperation and righteous conduct, while addressing the mind and the conscience. It can be only through wisdom, good advice and presenting arguments in the best way.
